I know from my own experience how easy it can be to get lazy and slip into a party scene without realising what stress you’re putting on your body or what condition your body is actually in. I have worked in the hospitality service industry for 25 years. I have worked late nights, early mornings and lived in England, Greece, Mallorca, Malaysia and Sydney. I have DJ-ed, worked and managed bars, restaurants, nightclubs and owned multiple venues, too. I have had a lot of fun and partied a lot – maybe too much. I knew that I wasn’t the healthiest person in my late twenties and some of my thirties; I was a bit overweight, but I was having a lot of fun and why would I want to change that?
Fortunately for me, I started to recognize the unhealthy life choices I was making before it was too late. I knew that I was a bit overweight but thought I would get around to sorting it out at some point, whenever I needed to or had to.
Well, it took a while to sort out (too long), and finally I made the positive change and decision to do something about it. I woke up one day and knew if I carried on with my lifestyle, which I had been leading for many years, I would eventually hit a point of no return and could become unwell with high blood pressure, become obese and even possibly end up with diabetes type 2. As well as partying and drinking all the time with no exercise I also had other factors with work pressure and stresses, anxiety and some depression due some life curve balls thrown at me. Sometimes it was easier to get away from it all with a drink or two in my hand.
So I made the decision to make the change to my life, and stuck with it. I lost 20kgs ! I changed my lifestyle, eating and drinking habits, exercised and decided to turn my negative thoughts to positive solutions and change my lifestyle around. The journey was quite amazing!
It wasn’t until this challenge of leading a healthier life and losing weight that I started to realise how overweight I actually was. I can now say that I am embarrassed that I let myself go so much. Life was just one big party and I loved it, but it would have come to a horrible end one way or another if I kept going.
Losing weight, as many people know, isn’t easy. It’s challenging and a battle in itself. It’s easy to binge, drink and eat what you want but as you can see from my story and my firsthand experiences it’s possible to take control, feel better and healthy again. Everyone has their own story, but it’s up to you, the individual, to make the change.
I’m not promising miracles and it not going to be easy, but with help and support from someone who has been there, there’s hope for everyone – including me. I’m not a medical practitioner or a magician but I can guide and support you along the path I took to healthier and happier lifestyle change.
